The NAIT Welding Program is a major provider of Welder apprenticeship training in Alberta. With a normal training capacity of 1200 apprentices per year, our physical plant consists of 10 fully equipped multi-process labs and 4 classrooms spread over two campuses. Description:
At Olds College, welding training is managed within the School of Agriculture, Business and Technology. The shop is equipped with 30 multi-process training stations. We primarily provide basic welding skills training for full-time learners in the Agricultural Mechanics, Agricultural Production and Management, and Turfgrass Management diploma programs, and for Agricultural Equipment Technician and Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentices. We have a portable training unit that is currently used to provide welder pre-apprentice training on location in conjunction with Drumheller Big Country Educational Consortium. We provide general interest evening extension courses and can offer custom-designed training sessions to serve industry needs.

Description:
SAIT has two welding programs, Welding Engineering – a 2-year Diploma program, and Welding Apprenticeship – a 3-year program. Welding Engineering has two full-time welding instructors and a yearly enrolment of 32 first-year students, with 18 to 20 students graduating in the second year. Welding Apprenticeship has 13 instructors and an average of 600+ apprentices a year.
    SAIT facilities include 6 welding labs with 28 booths in each lab, complete with inverter-type power sources complete with OAW-C. This gives the students access to OAW-C, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW processes.
    SAIT offers fall and winter evening programs from OAW to uphill or downhill welding certification. Welding inspection and NDT courses are available.
    Welding is part of SAIT’s business and industry program, offering everything from stainless steel pressure welding to offshore welding programs in Kazakhstan to Kyrgystand.

BCIT offers a full-time Entry Level Trades Training Program (Provincial Level C, plus the equivalent Apprenticeship Training) in welding, as well as continuous intake full-time B and A Level Upgrading year-round on three shifts, 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Refresher/brushup courses are offered on the 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. shift only. Description:
Welding is a seven-month certificate program with September and November entry dates. Graduates will receive a certificate from Red River College and a student CWB ticket. The purpose of the program is to develop the skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively perform the oxyacetylene, arc, tungsten inert gas, and metal inert gas welding processes and related operations.
       Students will spend seven hours a day, Monday to Friday, in the College. Five hours a day are spent on practical shop work, and two hours of classroom instruction in welding, mathematics, science, industrial communications, and blueprint reading.

Industrial Welding Fabrication
course with emphasis on “hands-on” training in Oxyace, SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW processes with fabrication and cutting using various metals. Blueprint reading, introduction to electrical, machine shop, hydraulics and applied work practices. Also part-time classes offered for new and experienced welders, structural and pipe courses. CWB and TSSA testing offered.

As part of an expanding welder-training program, Kemptville College in co-operation with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities is now a Training Delivery Agency (TDA) for the Welder Apprenticeship.
     Kemptville College is recognized as an industry leader in both training and testing, offering instruction by certified trades people in well-equipped shops and classrooms. The colleges’ industry network and support contribute to the high success and employment rates of Kemptville College Welding graduates. Program start date TBA.

WELT - Welding Techniques
Welding Techniques students learn and develop the skills and knowledge required to enter the welding, fabrication and millwright industry. Through hands-on learning in our shops - equipped with welding, cutting and testing equipment - graduates are prepared to meet industry standards and requirements. They learn: 

  • to interpret blueprints

  • welding symbols

  • fitting techniques

  • semi automatic cutting

  • robotics

  • welding ferrous and nonferrous metals

  • welding pipe, channel, and other structural forms

Students also learn - structural layout and inspection of weld defects while developing skills required in the industry. Students are also able to obtain certification with the Canadian Welding Bureau (C.W.B.) in our test centre for the following welding certificates:

  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (G.M.A.W.) Flat Position

  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (G.T.A.W.) Fillet

  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (S.M.A.W.) Four Positions

  • Flux Cored Arc Welding (F.C.A.W.) Flat Position

Also offered is the Welding Inspector Certificate through the CWB Learning Centre (part of the CWB Group).

Description:
Mohawk College offers a Pre-Apprenticeship Program in Welding (pdf) beginning in March, 2007. The program is 36 weeks in length, and features targeted academics, hands-on welding training, welding theory and science, employability skills and an 8-week paid job placement. Students who successfully complete the program will be granted credit for Level 1 of the MTCU Welding Apprenticeship Program.
