BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

CWA's Board of Directors met on September 12. Dave Fink welcomed Dan Tadic as a new director. Dan succeeds John Stecjuk as the representative of the Hamilton Chapter. The CWA thanks John for his participation in and contribution to the work of the Board of Directors.

The Board approved the final changes to the Constitution and Bylaws. The revised document will be presented to the general membership for approval at the Annual General Meeting.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

The Nominating Committee will meet on Friday, October 4, to finalize the slate of officers for the Executive Committee (President, First Vice-President, Second Vice-President and Treasurer). It will also finalize the lists of nominees for the Michael N. Vuchnich and the Robert J. Jacobson Awards.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND AWARDS DINNER

The Annual General Meeting will take place at 5:00 pm, on Monday, October 21, 2002, at the Toronto Board of Trade, 830 Dixon Road, Toronto.

The Awards Dinner will follow the AGM at 6:00 pm. The Michael N. Vuchnich and the Robert J. Jacobson Awards will be presented following dinner.

NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL ANALYSIS

Bob Shaw and Mick Pates were selected to represent Alberta and Ontario, respectively, in a workshop to develop the National Occupational Analysis (NOA) for the welding trade. The participants in this workshop will develop a document that reflects the tasks performed and skills required by welders in diverse work environments.

MANUFACTURERS SUPPLIERS COMMITTEE

The Manufacturers Committee met on September 11 and discussed operations for the Weld Expo Canada trade show (National Trade Centre, Exhibition Place, October 22–24, 2002). An evaluation session will be held immediately following the trade show to discuss the location of the 2004 show.

The Manufacturers Committee has changed its name to the Suppliers Committee to better describe its function in the CWA.

WELDING SYMPOSIUM

The CWA’s Welding Symposium will be held at Weld Expo Canada on October 22. Flyers notifying members and non-members of this event were mailed a week ago.

The symposium will include leading welding practitioners and educators discussing the latest in design techniques, robotics, laser welding, tandem arc and twin arc GMA, and welding techniques for aluminum and duplex stainless steels. Review the list of speakers and topics and let us know you are coming.

NATIONAL POST SUPPLEMENT

The National Post will publish a six-page welding supplement that will be included in the October 7 issue of the newspaper. Included will be articles on:

  • The differences in welding operations and techniques between North America and Europe
  • Welding educational and training efforts in Canada
  • Welding fume regulations and their impact on industrial competitiveness
  • New shielding gases and their applications
  • Canadian Welding Bureau’s role as the Accredited National Body (ANB) for welding qualifications in Canada
  • CWA’s Welding Symposium
