October 2007

SPECIAL NOTICE

This year, the Canadian Welding Association’s upcoming Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner have special importance. There will be a report on the status of the merger between the CWA and CWB Group. Members will be asked to approve the action plan for CWA’s future.

The Awards Dinner is a unique opportunity for the welding industry to honour its own. Again this year, two deserving welding professionals will be honored with the Robert J. Jacobson Memorial Award and the Michael N. Vuchnich Award. Scholarships will be awarded to several students from some of Canada’s leading welding-education institutions.

CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION AWARDS

The 2007 Awards Dinner will also be held at the Renaissance Toronto Airport Hotel on Monday, October 15, 2007, with a reception at 5:30 pm followed by the dinner and awards at 6:30 pm.

The Robert J. Jacobson Memorial Award will be presented this year to Don Gemmell of CWA’s Hamilton & Region Chapter. Don is being honored not only for his many years of work with the chapter but also for his work in the chapter’s fund-raising efforts and his support of education in the region. In the past three years, Don has been one of the leaders in the chapter’s efforts that raised over $300,000 in equipment, consumables and funds for the region’s high schools. He supports local welding education and students in 25 high-schools in the region. Quite a few students qualified for CWB tickets in their Grade 12 program. He participates on the advisory board for Mohawk College’s successful pre-apprenticeship program.

Ken Kerluke is this year’s awardee for the Michael N. Vuchnich Award. One of his nominators stated: “As to Ken Kerluke I can't overstate my endorsement for his candidacy. In addition to being an overall great guy, he contributes more than most by his clear communication of welding principles to welding engineers and to welders alike. He communicates the reality of the SCIENCE of welding which is that there are real and measurable variables that have predictable consequences. His courses take the art out of welding and put the science back in. After seven years in the field, I sat through one of his courses on the MIG welding of steel and learned a ton in one day.”
