CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITIES

Several CWA chapters were very active in their membership recruiting efforts in October. Can you and your chapter match their performance?

  • Thunder Bay brought in 21 new student members
  • Calgary recruited 10 new student members
  • Hamilton has set an objective of 70 new members this year, and they have 16 new individual members paid or in process in October

CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION JOURNAL

The Fall 2005 issue of the Canadian Welding Association Journal is being printed now and will be mailed on or about November 15. The theme of this issue is repair welding. Themes for upcoming issues are:

  • Winter 2006: GMAW (MIG)
  • Spring 2006: Welding Education in Canada
  • Summer 2006: New Technology & Power Sources
  • Fall 2006: Transportation & Farm Equipment Manufacturing

The Journal committee will meet next Tuesday, November 8, to discuss the content of the Winter 2006 issue. If you would like to submit an article or a proposal for an article, please do so ASAP to journal@cwa-acs.org.

CWA’S WEBSITE

There is a lot of information on CWA’s website that is a definite benefit of membership in the Association. Starting sometime in the next few weeks, you will be asked for a user name and password in order to access specific areas of the website (e.g., current and past issues of the Canadian Welding Association Journal).

Your user name is your surname in upper and lower cases (e.g., Smith, not SMITH or smith) and your password is your five-digit membership number, both as shown on your membership card.

CANADIAN COALITION OF WOMEN IN ENGINEERING, SCIENCE, TRADES AND TECHNOLOGY

The Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology (CCWESTT) will hold its national conference, titled “Producing Influential Leaders,” in Calgary from June 22 to 25, 2006. The conference will share information, resources and strategies to reach, recruit and retain women scientists, engineers, technologists, trades people and mathematicians.

The proposal submission deadline for papers, workshops and panel discussions has been extended to November 28, 2005. For complete details, visit the CCWESTT website, at www.ccwestt2006.ca.

CANADIAN WELDING INDUSTRY TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP

The Technology Roadmap is in process; we should see an outline shortly and a first draft of the document later this month. As soon as these are available, CWA will post them to the website and advise members. The summaries of sessions held in Edmonton, Kitchener, Montreal and Halifax are posted to the Technology Roadmap’s website, at www.weldingtrm.org.

CWA JOB OPPORTUNITIES

CWA has new job opportunities posted to its website.

FABTECH INTERNATIONAL AND AWS WELDING SHOW

The FABTECH International and AWS Welding Show is scheduled for November 13 to 16, 2005, in Chicago. Complete information can be seen on the AWS website, www.aws.org/expo, or the FABTECH website, at www.fmafabtech.com/FABTECH_Home.htm.

WELD EXPO CANADA

This Canadian welding-industry trade show is scheduled for September 26 to 28, 2006, at the International Centre in Toronto. The first planning meeting of the CWA Suppliers Committee and Reed Exhibitions will be held on November 22. Details will be distributed to all supplier members.

STAND UP FOR THE TRADES

The Conservative Party of Canada contacted CWA for comment about its platform called “Stand up for the Trades.” The platform includes:

  • A $1,000 “Apprentice Incentive Grant” to help pay for tools, clothing and work accessories
  • An “Apprentice Job Creation Tax Credit” for businesses to help create more positions
  • A “Tools Tax Deduction” for tradespersons to deduct up to $500 per year for tools purchased for work

This is a good start. Perhaps these are things we should look for from all parties.
