BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

CWA’s Board of Directors met on October 21, 2002, in advance of the Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner. Fourteen directors attended. Minutes of the meeting will be posted to the website. The following reports were presented:

  • Constitution: JOHN LEVI on behalf of Darrall Rigby, chairman of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee
  • Marketing: GREG PETTEPLACE, chairman of the Marketing Committee
  • Technical: GRANT HARVEY, chairman of the Technical Committee
  • Education: BRUCE JAMES, on behalf of Barry Patchett, chair of the Education Committee
  • Membership: JOHN LEVI
  • Treasurer: DAVID JORDAN, Treasurer

A Membership Committee was established to guide the association’s recruiting efforts.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting followed the Board of Directors meeting. The above-mentioned committees reported to the members present. The Constitution and Bylaws were accepted as presented by members.

The President and Executive Director reported on the progress of the Association since the merger of Canadian Welding Society and Welding Products Manufacturers Association of Canada a year ago. The slate of officers for the association was accepted as:

  • President: ROBERT SHAW
  • First Vice-President: BILL ECCLES
  • Second Vice-President: BRUCE JAMES
  • Treasurer: GRANT HARVEY
  • Past President: DAVE FINK

CHIC BARTLETT, JOHN BOBYK and NORM EATON were made honorary members of the Canadian Welding Association.

AWARDS DINNER

Eighty members and honorees attended the Awards Dinner at the Toronto Board of Trade, Airport Centre.

  • CHRIS CARR, a fourth-year, mechanical engineering student at the University of Waterloo, was awarded the Mike Cherry Memorial Scholarship.
  • MICHAEL (MICK) PATES was presented with the Michael N. Vuchnich Award for 2002 for his advancement of the science, technology and application of arc welding in Canada.
  • DARRALL RIGBY was presented with the Robert J. Jacobson Memorial Award for 2002 for his outstanding contribution to the operation of the Calgary Chapter of the CWA.
  • RICHARD SEIF and VICTOR COOKE were presented with past-president plaques for their efforts as presidents of WPMAC and CWS respectively and their roles in the founding of CWA.
  • DAVID LONG was presented with a plaque for his role as executive director of WPMAC and CWA.

WELDING SYMPOSIUM

CWA’s one-day welding symposium was a mixed success, with eight, highly rated speakers giving excellent presentations to a small but appreciative audience. Presentations will be available shortly on CD-ROM.

WELD EXPO CANADA

Fourteen CWA supplier members, as well as 85 other welding-product manufacturers and distributors, exhibited in this three-day trade show. The show included examples and demonstrations of the latest welding products, services and technology.

SUPPLIERS COMMITTEE

The Suppliers Committee, together with some non-members, will meet with Reed Exhibitions on November 6, 2002, in the CWA offices to discuss the results of the Weld Expo Canada trade show. The meeting will focus on what actions should be taken to ensure a successful show in 2004.

NATIONAL POST SUPPLEMENT

The National Post published a six-page welding supplement in its October 7 issue of the newspaper. The supplement reached the National Post’s more than 800,000 readers. For those who missed the supplement in its printed form, it is posted in Acrobat (pdf).

IN APPRECIATION

The week of October 21 to 24, 2002, was a very busy one for the Canadian Welding Association. Members of the association came together from across Canada to recognize the best in the profession and to guide CWA into its second year.
