SKILLS ONTARIO AND SKILLS CANADA
The Ontario Technological Skills Competition in welding will be held at RIM Park in Waterloo with the competition taking place next Tuesday, May 27, and the awards ceremony on Wednesday. The Canadian Skills Competition for the gold medal winners will follow on Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31.
The competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. and last five hours for the secondary level and seven hours for the post-secondary level.
The purpose of the challenge is to test and evaluate the various safety-oriented welding, fitting and flame cutting skills of Ontarios youth. In addition, print reading and welding symbols interpretation will be assessed.
The skills and competency to be tested include:
- general safety for oxy-acetylene and arc welding
- safe working habits
- safe set-up of oxy-acetylene equipment
- operating pressures for oxy-acetylene cutting
- selection of arc welding electrodes by their classifications
- selection of welding variables
- shielding gases for GMAW and GTAW* (*P.S. only)
- blueprint reading ability (dimensions are given in millimetres only)
- transfer of measurements and other information from blueprint to the project
- layout, position and fit components
- oxy-acetylene flame cutting (freehand only)
- welding with various processes
- interpretation and application of welding symbols
- cleaning of finished welds

MIKE IRVINE MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Mike Irvine Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Kings Forest Golf Club in Hamilton on Wednesday, June 18. The golf tournament supports the Skills Canada welding competition in sending the Ontario winners to the National Skills Competition. This is the 11th time the tournament has taken place.
