BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
CWAs Board of Directors met in Halifax on May 4. Eighteen board members, chapter representatives and staff attended. A highlight of the event was the application by a group in Halifax to form a chapter. The Board adopted a resolution to approve the new Halifax Chapter, immediately after determining that the new chapter met the Associations criteria.
Grant Harvey reported on the status of the Technical Committee. Manganese remains a focal issue for the committee, as it impacts Canadian industrys ongoing competitiveness.
Grant also commented on the objectives of the committee, which include, among other things, harmonization of standards, lobbying, technical assistance to the Executive Committee, and environmental issues.
David Long reported on the focus group for fabricators, a meeting that was held on April 26. The groups discussion indicated that CWA should generate a value proposition for fabricators, which would include CWAs focus on lobbying and training. CWAs lobbying effort in the manganese area has probably saved individual manufacturers thousands of dollars, and most are not even aware of the impact. The Board adopted a resolution to include fabricators as a new form of corporate member.
Individual membership in CWA is currently at 900 members. A review of membership categories and privileges will be conducted shortly and included in the Bylaws, if approved by the Board of Directors.
Financially, CWA needs to increase membership to ensure it remains a viable independent association. It is extremely important for CWA to get past its administrative phase of set up and amending the Constitution, and get into an operational phase of generating value for its members.
One of the prime objectives of this Board of Directors meeting was to amend the CWS Constitution and Bylaws into a form that would suit CWA.
A few highlights of the amendments include:
- Ensuring that the objective of the association meets the requirements of all members
- Building flexibility into the document, so that the Board can amend administrative items without requiring an annual general meeting
- Updating membership criteria and types of membership
The complete minutes of the Board of Directors meeting have been posted to the website.
