ALBERTA’S OIL SANDS OPPORTUNITY — MARCH 13 TO 15

There are billions of dollars in opportunities available to industrial suppliers both in Alberta and across Canada. A National Buyer/Seller Forum will be held from March 13 to 15, 2007, at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton. The flyer for this event can be seen on the CWA website’s homepage.

CWA MEMBERSHIP SURVEY

A membership survey was included with the Winter 2007 issue of the Canadian Welding Association Journal. We are looking for your feedback on how CWA is performing and what you as members want from it. We also posted the survey to the website so you can complete it online. The deadline for submission is March 16.

WESTERN MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY SHOW

Many of CWA’s supplier members will exhibit at the Western Manufacturing Technology Show in Edmonton from June 19 to 21. This is an opportunity for members and welding professionals to see the latest in welding equipment and products.

STUDENT WELD-OFF COMPETITION

The 8th Annual Student Weld-Off Competition will be held at Holland College in Georgetown, PEI, on March 30. It’s a competition for welding students from across the Atlantic provinces. It tests students on their knowledge of health and safety, oxy-acetylene cutting, and SMAW, GMAW and FCAW, as well as testing their practical skills in completing a welding project. Details can be seen on the Nova Scotia chapter’s webpage.

WINNIPEG CHAPTER EVENTS

Winnipeg will host a dinner event on March 21 about Metal Coating Technology and hold a tour of fabricators in Winkler on April 21. The fabricators include Lode King Industries and Meridian Industries – two of the feature stories in the Fall 2006 issue of the Canadian Welding Association Journal.

GOLDEN TRIANGLE CHAPTER’S TRY THE TECHNOLOGY EVENT

Golden Triangle held its very successful Try the Technology event on February 27. Over 200 people attended and nine suppliers demonstrated their equipment. This is a very popular and effective event. Other chapters should consider it. Golden Triangle chapter would be happy to share its methodology.

CWA GOLF EVENTS

There will be several CWA-sponsored golf events held across the country this season.

  • Mike Cherry Memorial Golf Tournament – August 28 at Granite Ridge in Milton.
  • Mike Irvine Memorial Golf Tournament – June 7 at King’s Forest in Hamilton.
  • Winnipeg Chapter’s Annual Golf Tournament – May 26 at Bridges Golf and Country Club

HAMILTON CHAPTER’S FUND-RAISING CHALLENGE

Hamilton chapter is making great progress in its fund-raising efforts for local high-school welding programs. To date, they have 20 donors to the program and have raised over $115,000.

They will host Industry Education Forum II on April 4th, at which representatives from industry, educational institutions, government and the CWA will share information on the status of the Fund-Raising Challenge. Information on the event can be seen on the Hamilton Chapter’s webpage.

CANADIAN WELDING INDUSTRY’S TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP (TRM)

The Steering Committee for the TRM is looking for support from all industry sectors where welding is a key enabling technology. A letter (pdf) has been posted to the CWA website. Please review it and ask the CEO or GM of your company to write us a letter supporting your industry, company and profession.
