The voice of the welding industry in Canada
March 2005

WESTERN BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Welding Association will meet in Richmond, BC, on Saturday, April 30. Membership will be the top priority on the agenda.

Contact your Chapter chair with suggestions for agenda items or concerns.

WELDING SEMINAR — RICHMOND, BC

In conjunction with our Western Board Meeting, the Canadian Welding Association will host a welding seminar at noon on Friday, April 29, at the Richmond Hotel & Convention Centre. The event will include:

  • Automated Plasma Keyhole Welding – Joe Smith, Air Liquide Canada
  • Latest Developments in Fabrication and Repair – Mick Pates, Nu-Tech Precision Metals
  • A Technology Roadmap for Canada’s Welding Industry – Geoff Nimmo, Industry Canada

Don’t miss this great opportunity to hear about some of the latest techniques and practices in welding and get an update on where the Canadian welding industry needs to go and how we’ll get there.

THE TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP FOR THE CANADIAN WELDING INDUSTRY

The technology roadmap committee is developing a document that will define the direction of the Canadian welding industry over the next decades. It is intended to lay out the industry’s needs for technology, applications, education and resources to keep Canadian industry competitive.

Input to the document will be organized on a regional basis (largely through CWA’s chapter system) and on industrial sectors including:

  • Durable goods and automotive
  • Petrochemical and energy
  • Structural fabrication and transportation
  • Aerospace
  • Electronics and medical
  • Resource industries

We need your help in finding volunteers to serve on the regional and sector committees. They must be able to provide a perspective on the technologies and applications involved and their impact on industry. It will involve a time commitment of only a few hours. If you can assist in this project or know someone who can, please contact CWA’s national office at the address below.

TRY-THE-TECHNOLOGY NIGHT

The Golden Triangle chapter hosted a very successful Try-the-Technology event on March 1 at Conestoga College. The event was supported by the Hamilton and Toronto chapters. More than 100 people attended – good attendance by any standard, but even better considering it was held in the middle of a winter storm. A few of the exciting demos included:

  • Aluminum pulse welding
  • Plasma welding
  • Brazing of aluminum
