The voice of the welding industry in Canada
June 2006
CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION JOURNAL
You should now have your Spring 2006 issue of Canadian Welding Association Journal. We regret that Northern College was omitted from our Education Issue. We do need your assistance in developing the editorial content for upcoming Journals. Our editorial plan, which shows Journal themes for two to four issues ahead, is posted to the website. Currently we are working on the summer issue, which has a theme of New Technology and Power Supplies. It will be coordinated with the advertising efforts for the Weld Expo Canada trade show in Toronto. The fall issues theme is Transportation & Farm Equipment Manufacturing.
Your Journal committee could use your assistance in sourcing articles and authors for the fall issue and developing themes for future issues. Help us to showcase your achievements and new technology and to provide you with a magazine that is representative of all areas of the welding profession and all areas of our country.
CWA ANNUAL AWARDS
The Canadian Welding Association will hold its Board of Directors meeting, Annual General Meeting and 2006 Awards Dinner on Monday, September 25, in Toronto. As ever, CWA will present:
- Robert J. Jacobson Memorial Award for an outstanding contribution to the operation of a CWA chapter
- Michael N. Vuchnich Award for advancement of the science, technology and application of arc welding in Canada
Please submit your nominations using the forms that can be found on our website. The deadline for submissions is August 18.
ONLINE MEMBERSHIP FORMS
We have had a glitch with our online forms not transmitting some data. If you have used them in the last while and not received a reply from CWA, please contact us as soon as you can.
MIKE CHERRY MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The annual Mike Cherry Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at the Granite Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday, August 29. It supports the CWAs scholarship in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo.
CAREER AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Several new jobs are posted to our website. We have also been in contact with immigration consultants who can provide welders from either south Asia or eastern Europe. If anyone is interested in hiring staff from either of these two areas, please contact the national office.
CHAPTER ACTIVITIES
Late spring is the time when CWAs chapter executives get together to plan coming fall and winter activities. Now is your opportunity to participate. Help them to provide meaningful programs. Your input into program planning, speaker acquisition and chapter administration would be welcomed. CWAs chapters are staffed and run by volunteers.
A REQUEST FOR ARTICLES AND ADVERTISING SUPPORT
As mentioned in the April newsletter, CWA has been invited by the CCIIW to produce a magazine that showcases achievements and good practices in the Canadian welding industry. The magazine will be distributed to delegates at the International Institute of Weldings 59th Annual Assembly and International conference in Quebec City at the end of August and mailed to CWAs list of 4500 welding professionals in Canada.
We still have openings for a few more articles. Again, if you have any suggestions for articles or authors, please let us know ASAP.
SKILLS CANADA
CWA welcomes 47 new student members who participated in the Skills Canada competitions across the country.
