The voice of the welding industry in Canada
July 2002, Issue No. 9
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND AWARDS DINNER
The Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner will be held on Monday, October 21, 2002, in Toronto. Members of CWA will have an opportunity to vote on the changes to the Association that will be recommended by the Board of Directors. Because the 2001 Awards Dinner was cancelled, this years Awards Dinner will honour persons for both the 2001 and 2002 award years.
SYMPOSIUM UPDATE
CWAs website has the latest information on the Fall Welding Symposium. You can register online.
MANUFACTURERS COMMITTEE MEETING
The CWA Manufacturers Committee met at the end of June to discuss issues of direct concern. The National Post will publish a six-page joint-venture supplement on the welding industry. It will contain advertising from CWA members and welding-related interest groups. Contact the CWA office in Markham for information on the editorial content or advertising in the supplement.
Bob Mathieu, show manager for Reed Exhibitions Weld Expo Canada trade show, met with the committee to discuss marketing and operations. The Manufacturers Committee wanted to have input into the show, as many of our members will be exhibiting their goods and services in the show and the Fall Welding Symposium is part of the show.
A meeting will be scheduled shortly between members of the Manufacturers Committee and Reed to discuss specific issues related to show operations and marketing.

KEVIN MORRISON
Kevin Morrison, Manager Welding Engineering, Nu-Tech Precision Metals, passed away peacefully on July 3 in Arnprior, Ontario.
Kevin, a graduate of the Welding Technology Program at Northern College, had a very successful career. He worked at Stelco, University of Alberta, Dominion Bridge, Saint John Shipbuilding, Fleet Technology and Nu-Tech. His forte was welding process application and he brought his unique skills and talent to all projects with which he was involved.
He will be deeply missed by family, friends and colleagues.
All members of the Canadian Welding Association extend their condolences. Donations to the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital in remembrance of Kevin would be most appreciated by his family.
A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is hard to believe that almost three quarters of a year has passed since we formed CWA and began putting the dream together. It has certainly been a challenge joining two groups with differing goals. Fortunately, all the people involved are supportive, and feel that having one organization is the best way to get the message out, that we are a solid industry, and that young people should be excited to join the welding industry...they should be able to trust they have a bright future for decades to come.
Since the formation of CWA, we have had a lot of activity, at both the chapter level and the national level. In early May, we had a very successful eastern board meeting in Halifax, which gave me the opportunity to meet the chapter chairmen, and get a better understanding of the goals and objectives of the many people across the country who donate their time to the CWA for the betterment of the welding industry. We also had the opportunity to meet with the new Halifax-chapter executive-committee members and welcome them to the CWA. Thanks to Tony Rose and his committee for running a well-organized meeting.
We have put together an alliance agreement with the Canadian Welding Bureau, whereby we will co-operate in specific areas for the good of the welding industry.
A section of the website has been designated for people in the welding industry seeking employment. Members of CWA looking for new career opportunities may post their résumés on our website at no charge. Companies may also post job opportunities, for a nominal charge of $100.
The program is moving along on schedule for a fall symposium to run concurrently with the welding show, Weld Expo 2002 in Toronto. The symposium will take place on Oct. 22, 2002, and the show will run from Oct. 22 to 24. Thanks to Mick Pates and his symposium committee for the work they are doing.
A special section in the National Post is being planned for early October to promote the welding show, as well as the welding industry as a whole.
An awards banquet is being organized for October 21 to coincide with our annual general meeting and to recognize people who have made special contributions in our industry. The Mickey Vuchnich, Bob Jacobson, and Mike Cherry awards will be presented along with others. Any scholarship or award presented by the chapters could also be part of the ceremony or at least get a mention.
We are endeavouring to increase the content of our monthly newsletter, so that it can be more meaningful to our membership. Help from the chapters in this area would be welcome. A list of email addresses of people to whom we should be sending occasional newsletters and invitations to join CWA would be gladly received from each of you. I expect each of you knows at least three people who would benefit from being a member. A special effort needs to be made to increase our membership; please encourage a friend to join and get involved in our industry.
