CWA NEWS

The voice of the welding industry in Canada
January 2003, Issue No. 13

CWA MAGAZINE

CWA has contracted for the production of an association magazine. The magazine will be dedicated to the needs of CWA members and will bring together articles of both a technical and a social nature. It will include some of the following:

  • Technical articles
  • Articles on major Canadian welding projects
  • CWA news items, including upcoming Chapter events
  • A membership directory

The magazine will be integrated with CWA’s website to ensure that time-sensitive items, such as events, changes to the membership directory and job opportunities, are readily available. CWA will solicit articles and content from all members and stakeholders.

MEMBERSHIP PROGRAMS

CWA has initiated a membership campaign focused on potential fabricator and manufacturer members. Fabricators and manufacturers who use welding as a process are a missing sector of CWA’s membership. Fabricators and manufacturers would benefit from joining CWA through:

  • Access to technical expertise
  • Ability to lobby governments at the provincial and federal levels
  • Networking with similar companies
  • Potential reductions in workers’ compensation costs
  • Influencing the setting of standards for the industry

SCHOLARSHIP PRIZES – GOODERHAM CENTRE FOR INDUSTRIAL LEARNING

The Canadian Welding Bureau, through its Gooderham Centre for Industrial Learning, has donated sets of Modules 1 to 19 of its Modular Learning System as prizes to scholarship winners from CWA Chapters. The CWB has contributed modules for the last three years to CWA Chapters that designate scholarship winners.

This year, the Calgary Chapter awarded a set to third-year apprentice welder Colin Michael Walsh of Fort McMurray, Alberta, and the Thunder Bay Chapter awarded a set to Dale Robinson.

The Canadian Welding Association appreciates this contribution from the Canadian Welding Bureau.

WESTERN BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

CWA’s Western Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3, 2003, in Winnipeg. As is traditional, the tentative timetable for the event is:

  • Friday evening – reception for Winnipeg Chapter members and national directors
  • Saturday morning and afternoon – Board of Directors meeting including Chapter updates
  • Saturday evening – dinner for meeting participants and spouses

CCIIW LIBRARY

The Canadian Council of the International Institute of Welding’s library of welding-related papers and articles can be found on the web, at www.cciiw.com/CCIIWListing.pdf. The collection includes 147 pages of listings and is searchable by keyword.

WORKPLACE SAFETY & INSURANCE BOARD

CWA’s Supplier Committee is working with Ontario’s Workplace Safety & Insurance Board to establish a Safety Group Program for members. It allows participating companies to earn significant rebates on their workers’ compensation costs. This program has been successful in other industrial sectors.

This is a win–win program, in which the only significant costs to a company are related to its improvements to safety programs and attending meetings. CWA will implement similar programs in other provinces where possible.
