SKILLS COMPETITIONS

Canada won six medals at the World Skills Competition 2007 in Shizuoka, Japan. And Louis-Philippe Major’s medal for welding was GOLD! Read about this achievement in the winter 2008 issue of the Canadian Welding Association Journal.

The 14th Canadian Skills Competition will be held in Calgary, Alberta, on May 25 to 28, 2008, and will be preceded by provincial competitions across Canada.

INNOVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY FORUM
FOR ALBERTA'S MANUFACTURING LEADERS

Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry will host this one-day forum on February 21, 2008, at the Coast Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre in Calgary.

NATIONAL BUYER/SELLER FORUM

The National Buyer/Seller Forum will be held in Edmonton on March 25 to 27, 2008. This dynamic, fast-paced event will showcase oil sands and industrial development procurement opportunities and solutions. The forum is sponsored by all levels of government in Alberta – federal, provincial and municipal. Details 

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES & GOLF 2008

Check out your chapter’s activities on the CWA website. Chapters have worked hard to provide worthwhile information and networking sessions this winter. Don’t miss them!

Golf tournaments are a great way for CWA’s chapters to raise money for scholarships, education and chapter activities. Toronto Chapter’s Mike Cherry Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Granite Ridge Golf Club in Milton on August 26, 2008. Contact the CWA office for registration details. Watch for details.

CCIIW BURSARY 2008

The Canadian Council of the International Institute of Welding (CCIIW) is offering one and/or more bursaries for the 61st Annual Assembly to be held in Graz, Austria, July 6-11, 2008. The purpose of the bursary is to increase Canadian participation in the work of the IIW, to foster direct Canadian involvement in international welding activities and to help Canada gain in stature as a progressive industrial country.

The bursary covers the early registration fee and some travel costs. The deadline for applications is April 7, 2008.

CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION JOURNAL

The winter 2008 issue of the Canadian Welding Association Journal will be mailed to you in a few days. The editorial deadline for the spring 2008 issue is March 1. Its theme is “Welding Exotic Metals.” If you are welding metals other than steel and aluminum, you may have a story members would like to hear. If you have any ideas for content, please let us know now.

BOC CANADA LIMITED CHANGES ITS NAME TO LINDE

On January 1, 2008, BOC Canada changed its name to Linde. Linde AG’s acquisition of The BOC Group, Inc. in September 2006 created The Linde Group, a world-leading industrial gases and engineering company with more than two million customers in 70 countries, sales of $18 billion (Cdn) and 50,000 employees worldwide.

WEBSITE STATISTICS

CWA’s website has been an effective communications tool for members, chapters and the Association as a whole. In 2007, 32,000 visitors visited the website 137,000 times. We encourage members to use the website as an effective way of finding out about your chapter and your Association.

We’ve been flooded by a large number of junk emails. We’ve missed a few incoming emails because our filters have deleted them. If you don’t hear from us after a few days, phone or fax us. We do want to hear from you.
