WELD EXPO CANADA

The supplier members of the Canadian Welding Association have been meeting with Reed Exhibitions to plan the Weld Expo Canada trade show and future trade shows in other venues across Canada.

Trade shows provide a venue where consumers (individual and corporate) can see a large variety of an industry’s products and services at one event.

It can also be a learning experience. To that end, CWA, Reed, and Reed’s other industry partners will host a series of seminars at Canadian Manufacturing Week, of which Weld Expo Canada is a part.

The seminars will be held during the trade show from September 26 to 28, 2006, in Toronto. They will include both high-level manufacturing topics and the nuts-and-bolts topics that individual practitioners need. Reed Exhibitions has sent out a call for papers to be presented at the event. For those interested in making a presentation, contact Reed via www.reedshows.com/CMW/cfp.asp.

CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION JOURNAL

The Winter 2006 issue of the Canadian Welding Association Journal has gone to print. A copy will be mailed to you on February 14. Bulk shipments will be sent to CWA’s chapters across the country.

CANADIAN WELDING INDUSTRY TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP

The Canadian welding industry Technology Roadmap is still in progress. The final version of the executive summary can now be seen on the CWA website (PDF). We hope to see the complete document this month.

WELDING INDUSTRY — HALL OF FAME

In the last 20 years, the CWA and its predecessors have recognized many leading figures in our profession with the Robert J. Jacobson Memorial Award and the Michael N. Vuchnich Award. Recently, the Canadian Welding Association received a suggestion to establish a hall of fame for key figures in the evolution of the Canadian welding industry. We would like your thoughts and suggestions on the matter:

  • What should the criteria for membership be?
  • Who should be the initial nominees?
  • How should entry be governed? And by whom?
  • Could this hall of fame be an on-line establishment only?

Please let us know what you think of this.

ISO MEETING IN MONTREAL

Immediately prior to the International Institute of Welding annual conference in Quebec City this summer, the International Organization for Standardization will hold its meetings (TC 44) in Montreal to discuss worldwide standards for welding including:

  • SC 7: Representation and Terms
  • SC 9: Health and Safety
  • SC 10: Welding Procedures
  • SC 11: Welding Personnel

Organizers of the event are looking for corporate support from the welding industry. Contact Viwek Vaidya at Air Liquide or Doug Luciani at the Canadian Welding Bureau for details.

CWA FLYERS

CWA’s national office has just published two new brochures, one for membership titled Join Canada’s Welding Trade Association and the other for prospective welding professionals titled WELDING — A critical industry for Canada…a rewarding career for you. They can be obtained from your chapter chair.

TRY THE TECHNOLOGY

The Canadian Welding Association’s Golden Triangle, Hamilton and Toronto chapters will host their Try-the-Technology event at Conestoga College in Guelph on February 28 from 3 to 7 pm. It’s an opportunity to see a sample of the latest in welding technology and test it out for yourself.

MIKE CHERRY MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

CWA’s Toronto Chapter will host the Mike Cherry Memorial Golf Tournament at Granite Ridge Golf Club in Milton on Tuesday, August 29. They are looking for sponsors and attendees. Mark your calendar. The tournament supports a CWA scholarship in engineering at the University of Waterloo.
