CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION JOURNAL

The editorial committee of the Canadian Welding Association Journal has completed work on the 2005 winter issue, and members should see their copies in March. The committee is beginning to work on the spring issue, which will have an automotive-industry theme. Members are invited to assist the committee in acquiring or sourcing articles for this issue. The editorial deadline is March 1.

WASTE DIVERSION ONTARIO

The Government of Ontario passed the Waste Diversion Act in 2002. The act is intended to remove specific categories of waste from landfill and other forms of disposal. Other provinces have considered or are considering similar legislation. To date, regulations have been put in place for used tires, waste motor oil and blue-box waste. The next category in the process is waste electronic and electrical equipment, including welding equipment. The importers, manufacturers and brand owners of this category of products are responsible to implement a program to divert the products from the waste stream at the end of their useful lives. Initially, higher-volume consumer electrical and electronic products are being targeted. For the time being, CWA will participate in the regulatory process as an observer.

RUSSELL DUNN

Russell Dunn passed away on August 17, 2004, in his 88th year. He joined the Canadian Welding Bureau in 1973 and served as general manager until 1981. Russell was instrumental in the creation of the Canadian Welding Development Institute (predecessor to WIC). As GM of CWB, he laid the foundation for its effective business operation. He contributed to its growth and the development of national and international standards, and to the strength of the Canadian welding industry. Russell received the Award of Merit from CSA and the Samuel Wylie Miller Award from AWS.

BILL STURGEON

Bill Sturgeon died peacefully at home on December 20, 2004. He began his welding-industry career in 1955 with Dominion Oxygen in Toronto and relocated to Edmonton in 1965 to manage Consumers Welding Supplies, a struggling business. When he sold the company in 1989, it had become one of the largest distributorships in Canada. He retired in 1994.

In 1980, Bill was the first Canadian elected as president of the National Welding Supply Association, an international trade association of distributors and manufacturers of packaged gases and welding supplies.

He leaves his wife of almost 50 years, Jane, and four children.
