The voice of the welding industry in Canada
April 2006

A REQUEST FOR ARTICLES AND ADVERTISING SUPPORT

The International Institute of Welding’s 59th Annual Assembly and International Conference will be held in Quebec City from August 27 to September 2, 2006. Traditionally, the national welding association of the host country produces a magazine that highlights the achievements of the welding industry in that country. In 1990, Canada hosted the IIW’s Annual Assembly and International Conference. The Welding Institute of Canada produced an 80-page journal of Canadian welding articles.

The IIW’s organizing committee has invited the Canadian Welding Association to do the same. The publication will be distributed to delegates from around the world and to the Canadian Welding Association Journal‘s mailing list of nearly 5,000. We have received a vote of support from the association’s supplier committee.

Through this issue of CWA News, we are inviting the Canadian welding industry to help us generate a publication that will show off Canada’s achievements in welding to the world. There are lots of great Canadian welding stories out there:

  • Advanced robotic systems
  • Laser welding
  • Microjoining
  • Manufacture and installation of pipelines
  • Oil-sands technology
  • Aluminum ferries
  • Refurbishment of nuclear reactors
  • State-of-the-art research labs

These and a myriad of other projects demonstrate Canada’s expertise in the application and development of welding technologies. Let’s show them to the world!

We are looking for as many articles as possible. The timetable will be submission of a proposal by May 1 and the article by June 15. Articles should be 1,000 to 2,000 words in length, with accompanying photos with resolutions of 300 dpi at published size. Both formal papers and welding-related stories will be accepted. Contact CWA at the national office (905-848-983, toll-free 1-877-285-8523, welding@cwa-acs.org) for further information.

ISO TC 44 MEETINGS

The International Organization for Standardization’s four meetings will be held in Montreal from August 21 to 25, 2006. The meetings will include sub-committee sessions on health and safety, welding personnel, welding procedures, and representation and terms. The organizing committee for these meetings is looking for sponsors, primarily from those Canadian groups that are participating in the meetings.

WELD EXPO CANADA

The Canadian Welding Association’s supplier committee has been meeting with Reed Exhibitions to plan the Weld Expo Canada trade show for September 2006.

In addition to displays of the latest developments in welding consumables and technology, the trade show will host a conference that will provide attendees with a significant learning experience.

There will be 32 presentations on topics related to welding, plant maintenance, engineering and design. CWA will host a dozen sessions that will cover topics in manufacturing, robotics, standards, safety, technology and economics.
