The voice of the welding industry in Canada
April 2002, Issue No. 6
CANADIAN WELDING BUREAU
The CWA and the CWB Group issued the following press release:
The Canadian Welding Association (CWA) and CWB Group have joined forces to create an alliance of the key Canadian welding organizations. As the first members of this alliance, the CWA and CWB Group will work to build the alliance, by reaching out to various universities and colleges involved in welding and welding research, and welding-industry associations and unions.
The alliance will:
- bring together the many sectors of Canadian industry that utilize or are associated with welding, in order to establish national objectives in pursuit of the maintenance of a strong industrial base;
- provide a forum for the discussion of matters of concern to the Canadian welding industry;
- formulate views and positions on such matters, in order to foster the development of a stronger Canadian industrial base utilizing or involved in welding;
- make representation to governments on matters regarding, among other things, regulation, policy support and trade, and to industry, unions and associations, as required.
The alliance is expected to discuss welding-related subjects such as:
- Research and development
- Technical support and resources
- Adoption of technology and automation
- Education and training
- Policy development
- Certification and qualification of personnel
- Health and safety
- Career awareness
- Welding-industry image
Policy and program positions promoted by the alliance must receive the unanimous support of all members. Other organizations involved in the Canadian welding industry will be invited to participate in the future development of the alliance.
MANITOBA SEMINAR
The Manitoba Chapters one-day seminar on Common Weld Faults & Non-Destructive Testing is scheduled for this Friday, April 12. There are currently 65 attendees registered and space is still available. Email winnipeg@cwa-acs.org to reserve a spot.
MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONS
CWA has been working to expand our relations with all welding-related trade magazines. Because there had been a cessation of some CWA members free subscriptions, we are working with the trade publications to reinstate free subscriptions for members. Attached is a subscription form for Canadian Machinery and Metalworking magazine. Those members wanting a free subscription to this magazine should complete the form and send it to the fax number indicated. As noted on the form, a business entity should be declared on the subscription form.
HALIFAX CHAPTER
The Nova Scotia Chapter of CWA is centred around the Truro area. A Halifax Chapter is being organized to accommodate the large number of welding professionals in the Halifax area. Members of the new Chapter will be introduced to CWAs national Board of Directors on May 3, when the Board holds its Spring meeting in Halifax.
EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Barry Patchett, Chair of CWAs Education Committee, will be in contact shortly with Chapter Chairs to solicit their participation on the Education Committee.
HALIFAX BOARD MEETING
The CWA Board of Directors will be meeting on May 3 and 4 in Halifax. Items on the agenda include the status of CWAs active committees and the Weld Expo Canada trade show (October 22 to 24) and the plans for the Annual General Meeting/Symposium (October 20/21).
